Legal notice generator

Mandatory on any French online store, and the page everybody keeps postponing. Fill in the form, get a text ready to paste into a Shopify page.

What this tool does — and does not do

A legal notice is a declarative document: who publishes the site, who hosts it, how to reach you. It is a form, and filling that form is exactly what this tool does. Your terms of sale, by contrast, are a contract binding you on withdrawal rights, statutory warranties and mediation: they cannot be generated blind, and we do not offer that.

Site publisher

The name you sell under, if it differs from your registered name.
Optional here. Note: for a sole trader, French law does require the civil name — many people use a business domiciliation service rather than leave it out.

Contact and publication

Usually the manager or the president.

Host

The Shopify pre-fill is a starting point: check these details in your host’s terms of service, they change over time and depend on your country.

Consumer mediator

Mandatory in France if you sell to consumers: you must have signed up with an approved mediator and name them. Leave empty if you have none yet — but it needs sorting.

Your legal notice

This text is a template built on the disclosures required by French digital economy law. It is not legal advice: read it over, and have it reviewed if your activity is regulated.

Frequently asked questions

What is the risk of having no legal notice?

Missing the disclosures required by French law is a criminal offence, up to one year in prison and a €75,000 fine for an individual. In practice the common risk is a report from a competitor or an unhappy customer — but the page takes five minutes to publish.

Do I have to show my home address?

If you are a sole trader working from home, yes, the address must appear. Many people then use a business domiciliation service, which settles the matter cheaply.

Where do I publish this page on Shopify?

Online Store → Pages → Add page, then link it in your footer menu. That is also where your terms and privacy policy belong.
